2002 December: Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene deeded the 547 acres of Crownsville Hospital Grounds west of I-97 to the Maryland Environmental Trust, with the stipulation that both a conservation easement and a wildlife management agreement be placed on the property.
2006 April: SRLT holds the inaugural Walk for the Woods in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area. The event is held annually, with the number of attendees steadily climbing every year.
2007 December: MD/DC Audubon, South River Federation, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service complete bird surveys in the Greenway that result in the area’s designation as an Important Bird Area.
2008 SRLT receives grants from both the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation and the Biophilia Foundation that allow the expansion of land protection and outreach efforts in the Greenway.
2009 January: South River Greenway partners host the “South River Greenway: Land, Water, People” conference. County Council Representative Jamie Benoit and Director of Recreation and Parks Frank Marzucco speak to interested citizens and landowners on the importance of land preservation in Anne Arundel County.
April · Anne Arundel County purchases the 33-acre Alan Boehm property, a key parcel contiguous to the 547-acre Bacon Ridge Natural Area. · SRLT hosts the fourth annual Walk for the Woods in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area. Over 300 people attend.
June · Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts, and SRLT co-host Save a Plot, a volunteer event to control the highly invasive wavyleaf basketgrass recently found in the Greenway. · SRLT, South River Federation, and Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks co-host the South River Greenway BioBlitz, a volunteer event in which scientists led volunteers to identify and catalog as many living things in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area as possible in a 24-hour period. Over 50 scientists and volunteers attended, and over 300 species were identified.
September: · SRLT and Maryland Environmental Trust Boards approve the conservation easement on the 630 acres of the Bacon Ridge Natural Area. · SRLT co-hosts a hike with the Chesapeake Outdoor Group in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area.
October: · Chesapeake Bay Foundation, SRLT, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and South River Federation complete a volunteer reforestation project, planting over 1400 trees on 4 acres in the headwaters of Bacon Ridge Branch, with the help of 130 volunteers. The project was funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust and Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
December · Anne Arundel County purchases both the 73-acre Green property and the 76-acre Piera property, both of which are essential in providing public access to the Bacon Ridge Natural Area. · SRLT and the Maryland Environmental Trust complete the conservation easement on Hidden View Farm, ensuring the permanent protection of the privately-owned 61-acre parcel. · The Greenway is honored by the Washington Smart Growth Alliance as a regional conservation priority for 2009.
